Text Box: Reading Explorers is the federally funded Title 1 reading assistance program here at Issaquah Valley Elementary. The curriculum used is ISD provided and is called Reading Explorers, a research-based program that provides structure and materials to support young readers and writers.
Students will have the opportunity to build literacy skills through reading, writing, word work activities and a home connection. Literature is used as the basis of the lesson and then connects to a shared book experience.
Many skills and strategies are taught throughout the year with an emphasis on comprehension strategies, writing skills and listening/communication skills. Various learning styles are used to ensure that all types of learners have a chance to be successful.
The core program uses developmentally appropriate fiction and non-fiction texts.
At the elementary level program, eligibility in Reading Explorers is based on:
Screening for phonological awareness and letter sounds in Kindergarten
Scores on other assessments, such as DRA, Stanford 10, and WASL
Teacher recommendation
English Language Learning students need to have a score of 3 on the LAS in order to be eligible for Reading Explorers
Students with a reading IEP are not eligible
